Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy was developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987. It’s original focus was on treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However it has since evolved to being useful with a variety of presentations such as anxiety, depression, grief and chronic pain.

It works by bringing a triggering image or memory into your awareness whilst simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation is left and right alternating eye movements, tapping, touch or sounds. This creates extra demands on your working memory which leads to a reduction in distress and a desensitisation of the original trigger.

l have recently been using EMDR therapy more frequently and noticing some great results! People have reported feeling more confident, less anxious about upcoming events and more able to cope with triggering memories, feelings or physical sensations.

EMDR can also be useful if you have found other therapies haven’t worked for you.

EMDR isn’t recommended for everyone due to the intensity of emotions that can arise during a session. A thorough assessment and preparation needs to be undertaken before engaging in an EMDR session.
